Talk about fish

Where do fish live (salt water vs. fresh water)? How do fish breathe? How do fish swim? What else lives in the water? Look at an aquarium if you can.

Game - Fish for the Right Color

Put the 8 colored fish in a bag. Tell the children that this is a "fishing bag" that has colored fish inside. Pass around the "fishing bag" and have the children take turns reaching their hands inside the bag, pull out a fish and saying what color the fish is. (extension - Put letters or numbers on the fish and have the children identify it.)

Game - Fishing Trip

Hide the fish around the room and have the children search for them. Let the children take turns hiding the fish.

Finger Play - Once I Caught A Fish Alive

One, two, three, four, five, (Hold up 5 fingers, one at a time)
Once I caught a fish alive. (Hold up an imaginary fish)
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten, (Hold up fingers on other hand, one at a time)
Then I let it go again. (Imitate throwing fish back into the water)
Why did I let it go? (Hold up hands in questioning pose)
Because it bit my finger so! (Shake right hand)
Which finger did it bite? (Hold up right hand)
This little finger on the right. (Hold up little finger)

Sing "I'm A Little Fishy"
(to the tune of I'm A Little Teapot)

I'm a little fishy, I can swim.
Here is my tail, here is my fin.
When I want to have fun with my friend,
I wiggle my tail and dive right in.

Underwater Picture

Blue or clear cellophane
blue or white posterboard
tape
glue
pictures of underwater life/objects

The children glue the pictures onto the posterboard to make an underwater scene. When they are finished the picture is covered with the cellophane, taping it to the back of the picture.

(Nancy’s note: we used blue plastic wrap. I had a sheet of fish and other ocean things the kids could color and cut out. We also had stickers and the children can also draw a scene.)

Lets Go Fishing Snack idea

Have children wash hands first. Tell them they are to leave the fish on their paper towel until you tell them to eat them. (That may or may not work, of course!)

Give each child a paper towel and place 10 goldfish crackers on each towel. Have the children count out ____ fish. When all have the correct number they can eat their fish. Repeat with a different number until you have used up all ten goldfish. Replenish at your discretion.

Finger Paint

Use blue finger paint.
