Paper Watermelon
. tissue paper squares, 2 shades of green or one dark green and one white
. red crayons or markers
. watermelon seeds or stamper markers
. dinner size paper plates (I used the Chinet kind because of the raised up edges)
(You may want to have the children eat some watermelon to get the seeds. I didn't happen to have any when the mood struck so we used "eyeball" stamper markers and it worked out great!)
. Cut the paper plates into quarters to create wedges and have the children colour them red
. Now have the children glue some of the darker green tissue paper (lightly scrunched up) to the round edge of one of the paper plate wedges
. Next they can glue the light green (or white) pieces just inside of the dark green to make the next layer.
. Glue some seeds on the red layer or stamp some seeds on

Red and White Tableclothes
Section off a piece of white paper, into squares and have the children
glue red squares of paper in every other spot. This is also a good time to talk about the food groups.

Ants at the Picnic Mural
Cut out pictures of food (or let the children do it) out of magazines.
Give each of your children a paper plate. Have them glue their plates
to a paper tablecloth. Then have the children glue the food pictures on
the plates. Let them add "ants" to the mural by lightly touching their
thumbs to washable black ink pads and pressing their thumbs on the
tablecloth. Hang the tablecloth on the wall or a bulletin board.

Sponge print Ants
No picnic would be complete without a pesky ant or
two. To make these cute little critters cut 3 circles out of sponge.
Each circle should be a different size. With brown or black tempera
paint have the kids sponge the 3 circles onto manila paper. When the
paint is dry add features to the ants ( legs, eyes, etc.) with a
marker. These are really cute!

Ants
cardboard egg carton
black paint
pipe cleaners
wiggly eyes
With any picnic there are ants! Make these cute ants by dividing an egg
carton into two piece sections. Paint them black. Allow to dry. Cut the
pipe cleaner in 8 sections (2 shorter than the other) Place the two
short pieces around the head area and use the 6 longer pieces for legs.
Add wiggly eyes, and you ants are ready to enjoy any picnic!

Fancy Ants
Make an ant shape about the size of a peanut from black, blue, red
construction paper. With help pole 3 holes in the body. For the legs,
place 2 paper fasteners into two holes next to each other and open to
lie flat. Turn the ant over and place another paper fastener, point
side up in the last hole. Bend back slightly. Draw some food on a paper
plate, put the ants on the plate and place a magnet underneath. Make
the ants crawl by moving the magnet.

Bear Picnic Board
Give each child a sitting bear shape cut out of brown construction
paper. Have the children brush their bear shapes with a thin layer of
glue. Then let them sprinkle coffee grounds (rinsed and dried) all over
the glue and shake off the excess. Set the bear shapes aside to dry.
Part 2
Give each child a small paper plate. Let the children glue precut
pictures of foods on their plates to make
picnic lunches.
Part 3
Hand a red and white checkered tablecloth on a wall of a bulletin
board. Attach the bear shapes to the tablecloth, with each bear holding
a plate. If desired, add other shapes cut out of construction paper,
such a picnic basket, a shade tree, a sun and grass.
